Coup and Leadership Change
General Omar Tarek El-Sayed has led a violent coup in the Kingdom of Kemet, overthrowing his father, President Tarek Anwar El-Sayed. During the coup, he allegedly killed his father and several Tyrianian and Phoenician delegates at a peace summit where delegates of all three countries were in discussions of integrating their disparate oil economies together to compete with the larger oil cartels of the region. This discussion allegedly included a security treaty where the countries would restructure their military commands for better cooperation and shared responsibility for security in the region. Following the coup, General El-Sayed declared himself by the title and name Emir Nasr III, shut down most embassies in Cairo, the previous capital of Kemet, and relocated military operations and the cenetral government to the newly established administrative city of Jann.
Uranium Smuggling Incident
Months after the coup, a Byzantauran cruiser encountered a Kemet-flagged cargo ship in distress in international waters in the Western Mediterranean. Upon assisting, they discovered the ship was carrying uranium enrichment equipment and unprocessed uranium. The ship was seized under the suspicion that Kemet was exporting nuclear materials to extremist groups in Hauran, or Hauran itself. This led to the United Nations imposing economic sanctions on Kemet, crippling its international trade. However, notable UN members like Donovia and Olvana opposed the sanctions.
Military Aggression
In retaliation, Emir Nasr III ordered an invasion of the Tyrian-controlled Sinai Peninsula, targeting the oil field in Ras Abu and the refineries at Al Arish. This escalated tensions as Tyriana demanded an immediate international retaliatory response, and Byzantauran forces increased patrols in the southern Mediterranean looking for suspicious shipping traffic. A confrontation ensued, resulting in Kemetian destroyers heavily damaging a Byzantauran warship. The Tyrian airfields of Melez, and Bir Hasanah, and Al Arish were destroyed in the assult, with the Kemetian Republic Army 1st Field Army capturing the Sinai penninsula in 9 days. The Tyrian air force sustained roughly 40 combat losses at this time, bringing their total fighter count from 84 to 44, while the Kemetian Air Force received only 13 losses, mostly from its 86th squadron due to superior joint engagement with the KRA’s IADS. Still, the Tyrians have managed to nearly wipe out the 3rd Division, which lead the initial charge. It is estimated that the Tyrians have successfully engaged over 1500 armored vehicles at this point, although the KRA likely has 3000 more in the Sinai penninsula alone.
Now, the KRA 1st Division has reached the Tyrian interior and is starting sustained artillery bombardment of Hatzerim, Ramon, and Ovda Air Bases using the 1st and 2nd Division’s 9A52 Smerch MLRS battalions, although the ground war has stalled with 4x Tyrian armored brigades successfully forming a wall to stop the KRA’s advance. However, the KRA has superior artillery, superior numbers, and at this point, a larger air force. Although airspace is still tightly contested, Tryian high command believes that they are on the brink of yielding air superiority to the KAF, which is likely to allow the KRA to push with the KAF further north into the Tyrian heartland. Tyrian high command believes that if the KRA can establish a foothold on the 31°30’ parallel, that Smerch artillery would have direct fire on their remaining airbases, likely resulting in a total loss of their air force.
Nuclear Threats and International Response
Kemet has now threatened nuclear retaliation against any further interference with its economic activities. U.S. Intelligence reports that Kemet lacks sufficient HEU to pose an immediate threat but is working to develop over 400 nuclear warheads for their Donovian Skud-B systems.
NATO’s Reaction
In response to the attack on the Byzantauran warship, NATO invoked Article 5 and pledged to remove Emir Nasr III from power and restore the former government in Kemet, while removing all of Kemet’s weapon manufacturing and any Emir loyalist military forces.
