The primary responsibility of a Landing Signal Officer (LSO) is ensuring the safe arrival of CTOL aircraft aboard the ship. High-performance aircraft, tight tolerances, and all-weather operations require individuals with exemplary skill and judgement. To assist in landings, one must consider wind, weather, aircraft capability, pilot experience, etc. to ensure the safe arrival of aircraft. While the ability to grade pilots and provide constructive feedback is an added bonus of the role, it's important to have a dedicated role to work with incoming pilots to help them land safely.
